WIN Gallery welcomes you to “Gratia Viva”, Marcel Lupșe’s exhibition honoring plants that heal, sustain and accompany us in life and memory.
Step inside your soul, into that chamber where memories decant, where fully embraced moments remain. In this intimate space, pivotal scenes of life can be recalled and recreated ad infinitum. Images, sounds and fragrances mix seamlessly and erode distance and time. Perhaps the most evocative presence, that can trigger and enhance this process, is that of flowers and, by extension, of plants. It should be no surprise since they accompany us in all our joys and sorrows, they sustain our very existence and heal us, literally and metaphorically.
Marcel Lupșe, the revered artist presenting the new exhibition at WIN Gallery, explores the botanical universe with utmost sensibility, in order to grasp its essence and relation to us. He anchors this pursuit within Romanian tradition, using it as a key to decode a myriad of legends, superstitions and scholarly associations. By appealing to symbols deeply engrained in folk rituals and beliefs, his artistic renditions are true vignettes of identity. They are not exhaustive in scope but glimpses at a shared history and wisdom that inform our perspectives and continue to shape our trajectory, as individuals and as a nation.
Under the curatorial vision of Ms. Marinela Măntescu- Isac, the display of works follows two story lines that intertwine: the wild and the tended flora. On one hand, there is the manifestation of absolute freedom, of the incredible power to survive, to adapt, to reign over the most difficult lands and conditions. The thistle is perhaps the most compelling exponent. On the other, there is the “bundling” of plants, the human touch that binds, tames and channels their incredible power. Bunches of herbal remedies or bouquets of lavender masterfully illustrate this relation.
It is this duality, this dance of force and fragility that unites us - two very different forms of intelligence inhabiting the same planet and subject to the same cycles of emergence and disappearance. Gratia Viva is a recognition of this common journey. It is an exhibition dedicated to resilience, to the wonders of life, to what makes it possible and beautiful.
At the confluence of flowers in full bloom and dried herbs, there is also a whispered invitation to consider what has staying power, what needs to be conserved and treasured, what has made us who we are what will continue to bring prosperity and joy. At a time when technology and artificial intelligence are increasingly permeating our daily conversations, the natural world and collective knowledge should be equally present in our thoughts. Such a proposition is far from being a veiled attempt to reject the future. It is a way to prepare for it.
